BY HUTTON WEBSTER, PH.D. PROFESSOR OF SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY IN THE UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA AUTHOR OF “PRIMITIVE SECRET SOCIETIES”

A regular series of authenticated facts is what alone can enable us to rise towards a perfect knowledge in it.”—WILLIAM MARSDEN, _The History of Sumatra_, London, 1811,
